Nuforce NE-6 - very, very good.Jun 01, 2010
By El Geraldo My Shure SCL3's died after 15 months, and I was waiting for a warranty repair, so needed a cheaper replacement, quickly. I have read dozens of reviews on each of dozens of in-ear headphones. I tried the Bose ones in their store, but didn't like the price. Trusted what people had written here about the NE-6's, and they were right - they do sound very good. Much more bass than the SCL3's. Not as much however as the surreptitiously nauseating bass that the CX300's have. Quantity of bass varies greatly with depth of insertion into ear canal. Bass is nice and clean, and goes quite low. The medium silicone tips (the factory-fitted default) did it for me. I found that the double-flanged tips gave more sound isolation, but less bass. I can't actually insert these things into my ears any further because the right-angled strain relief rubber on the wires touches my ear.
I can listen to anything from my music collection with the EQ set to flat and bass boost on zero (Archos A605 WiFi). With the Shures or Sennheiser CX300's, I was always fiddling about, trying to get the optimal sound - which I never got. The treble sounds are very much there, but pleasing and not clashy like they are on cheaper headphones (e.g. SkullCandy Ink'd). Treble is slightly more subdued than the CX300's, which is a good thing. I really don't like those headphones. I wish I still had the Shure's to compare with, but I think the Shure's sounded a tiny bit more "pure" - probably because they have very slim bass response and rolled-off treble. The NE-6 are ridiculously more efficient than the open-back Sennheiser HD490's that I have had for years (and are the best sounding cans I have). Not really fair to compare in-ears and open-backs but the NE-6's are a usable alternative for high fidelity listening. That can't be said for ANY of the other headphones I have at home.
The casing of the earphones (a dumpy blue cylinder, which reminds me of the Apollo spacecraft Service Module) is definitely metal of some sort, as it "clinks" if you touch them together. The pouch that comes with them is "pleather" and not leather as somebody suggested. Also, it closes with a pair of sprung strips (like a cheap sunglasses case) rather than magnets as was suspected by the same reviewer.
Things I don't like:
* Microphonics from cable is quite bad, compared to the SCL3's which have a very thick cable
* No strain relief on the cable junction - bound to fail there eventually
* If I don't remember to extract each earphone carefully, I can hear the speaker diaphragm crinkling - eek! That shows how good the seal is. Doesn't do the driver any good at all though. I had a pair of Koss "The Plug's" and eventually they became so weak that they would do this all the time and the treble went completely.
Before anybody flames me, I compared to the headphones I have access to at home, without regard to price point. I got the Shures for 1/3 price anyway so for me they are comparably priced!
Shipping from the manufacturer (but bought via Amazon) was very fast. Arrived in my mailbox (CA to TX) via USPS several days before the expected date. I too paid for the faster shipping for 1 dollar more.
Conclusion - if you're looking for a pair of in-ears for use with an MP3 player, and are thinking of spending a ton-fifty on a pair of SCL3's, don't even bother. Just buy these NE-6's and send me the difference. You'll have a better sounding set of earphones!
[Update - 6/28/10] Shure sent me a new pair of SCL3's to replace the faulty ones. I fired up the old MP3 player and listened to a selection of music, switching between each set of phones several times. Having been without them for several weeks, I fully expected that the Shure's would sound clearer and justify their 3x price tag, and that I would switch back to the Shures as my main set of headphones. That wasn't the case - the NE-6's have more bass and more treble, and still sound every bit as pure as the Shures. The SCL3's are far more heavy duty of course - thicker cable and meatier strain reliefs. The NE-6 in contrast feel like they're going to fall to bits if I accidentally pull on the cord - but for listening to and enjoying music on an MP3 player, the NE-6's win hands down.

Audiophile's take on the terrific NE-6 earphonesNov 27, 2010
By TECK13 The NuForce NE-6 earphones are very good sounding earphones and an exceptional value.
I am a long time audiophile (some would say audiophool) and my main audio system is definitely reference quality helping me appreciate what recorded music can and should sound like. I generally share my biases at the start of my reviews so there is no ambiguity about where I am coming form. And I have many points of view regarding headphones/earphones. Although head and earphones can match and often surpass the accuracy and resolution of high end speakers they do not get the sound stage right. The music always appears to be coming from the middle of your head versus from a natural space in front of you. So spending a lot of coin to achieve the last degree of accuracy and tonal quality but never achieving even a remotely lifelike soundstage seems like a fool's errand to me (unless you are using the earphones as performing musician - a whole different kettle of fish). There are headphone amps that add circuitry to correct this but then you are mucking up the sound quality with another layer of processing. I prefer the sound and comfort of over the earphones to in-ear phones but for anything active or on-the-go, forget that. Even just walking around who wants to use big ol' "cans". So unless your are listening at home I opt for in-ear. Finally, my point of view is that nearly all earphone use today is with iPods/MP3 players. While iPods are capable of excellent sound quality, practically that is rarely achieved. The music files need to be lossless and many of the devices lack the output juice to drive phones to their dynamic potential. Because of all this my feeling is that phones for an iPod should not cost a lot.
Well these baby's cost less than ANY Apple iPod. An excellent starting place. They come with four different earpieces. Finding the right one is critical because if you don't get a solid seal inside your ear you will not hear the bass these phones are capable of producing. The sound of the NE-6 phones is very musical. Very good detail and great tonal balance. The strength of the phones is in the mid-range where most of the music lives. The errors of the phones are ones of omission. The treble lacks that last bit of sparkle but for long term listening that is a thousand times preferable to pumped up, exaggerated, hurt your ears high notes. The slightly rolled off top end is in balanced with a lack of the lowest notes - to my ears the bass rolls of around 30 or 40 Hz - but make no mistake, there are plenty of deep and realistic low notes. Perhaps most meaningful, these phones sound many time better than the standard white earbuds. Better in every respect. To get better sound than these you will need to spend three times their cost.
The quality of the phones seems solid for the price. NuForce is the real deal too. They are coming on strong as a company offering an expanding line of superb sounding products at industry altering, reasonable prices.
If you listen to highly compressed digital files (e.g. 128 kbps) using an inexpensive iPod/MP3 player have your fingers run to Amazon.com, don't walk, and pick up a pair of the NE-6 earphones. It's a most complementary match. And a waste to spend more and a crime to keep listening to the stock white phones. If the ratings allowed a half star I'd give the NE-6's 4 & 1/2 stars. For value they'd get 5 stars plus. For absolute sound, 4 stars, which for the price is a home run. I'd also like to see all earphones come with flat wires to minimize tangling.
Bottom Line: You can spend more or less for phones but why when these sound so good and are less than $40.

AmazingNov 13, 2009
By SV For the past month I've been soul searching for new in-ears. I've read hundreds of reviews of hundreds of products on CNET, Head-fi, and many others. I came across NuForce and was impressed by their website and decided to just give it a try.
I've had the NE-6 for about a week now. These are identical to the NE-7 minus the mic, which is no big loss for me since I don't listen to music on my cell, and I also like the deep blue metal rather than the copper color on the NE-7.
Out of the box, these sound amazing. After about 30-40 hours of burn in time, they sound incredible. The bass is very rich and powerful and provides the perfect amount for hip hop and electronica music, without overshadowing the other ranges. Perfect for working out to. The mid and high ranges are very detailed. With a lot of songs, it sounds like the music is actually playing from regular speakers in your room, rather than the in-ear's. I've been startled a few times because voices sound like they are coming from someone next to you rather than the song. Everything is balanced very well, no one range blares over the others like in a lot of in-ears.
I'm not some die-hard audiophile so I can't really get too detailed about comparisons and specifics, but these things just rock. I listen to a lot of hip hop, rock, classic rock, electronica, and sometimes even classical. The NE-6 are incredible for any genre I'm listening to. This is the most expensive pair of in-ears I've ever purchased, but as people have said, they sound like they should be in the $150 range. Since I can't compare to other expensive in-ears, I'll say this: After listening to these, I have no clue why some regular consumer like myself would pay for anything more. These just sound phenomenal plain and simple.
And now for the non-audio stuff. The cord is rubberized and is fairly thin. However, it feels very sturdy and I think it will hold its own for a very long time as long as I don't neglect my ne-6's. The plug is an L plug with plenty of reinforcement. It has a unique design and It still fits through my iphones candyshell case. I don't see the plug ever breaking or causing problems. It has a symmetrical Y split, which is awesome because I HATE asymmetrical cords. It also has a slider on the Y split to prevent tangles. There is a small clip that is right below the Y split that you can slide up and down the cord. At first I did not like this, but I have found the it works great to clip to your jacket or shirt when you are moving around because it keeps the cords from accidentally getting caught on something. You could always just take it off though. They come with 4 pairs of tips: small, medium, large, and a double flange tip. The medium fits perfect for me and its super comfortable. Finally, they come with a sweet little leather pouch that magnetically closes.
All in all, the NE-6's ended my month long search the instant I took them out of the box. It's hard to describe how great they sound, but I actually look forward to the next time I can listen to them every day. They also shipped super quick, way before Amazon's estimate. I ordered at 7pm on a Thursday, and they were on my doorstep the following Monday morning. I chose the second fasting shipping method because it was only like a dollar more.
BUY THESE! You will NOT be disappointed!

Ne-6/Ne-7m review, breakdownFeb 06, 2010
By Jedi Knight JT Generally most reviews are long, detailed and express the sound/signature etc.. in complete detail in accordance to the listener. But i will keep this short and sweet simply for the simple reason these headphones are amazing for their price!
Background information-
- Owned many over the ear and in ear headphones.
- Owned the NE-6 headphones for more than a month, Burned in for more than 50 hours.
- My first set of IEM's so my experience is very biased when it comes to IEMs.
Initial Impressions-
The Ne-6 IEMs simply blew me away for the price out of the box. I am a huge fan of the simple but stylish minimalistic approach. The headphones have a metallic electric blue housing which provides it a sense of style and more importantly a sense of quality. The rubberized cord adds to the solid feel along with the gold platted L shape reinforced plug.
Sound Quality-
Bass: The headphones have an excellent bass response (tight and powerful without overpowering the song in any way). I was most impressed at how the headphones isolated the bass response from the mids and highs. Even if you do not care for bass or are not a bass lover , you will turn to appreciate it with these headphones.
Mids: The mids could be stronger as it lacked precise detail and isolation of the various sounds. Accordingly the mids can get slightly muddled at times. But overall have enough power to ensure it does not lag behind the bass and high notes.
Highs: The highs are clear, concise and a tad bright. But generally speaking play a pivotal role in enjoyment of the music due to its bright nature. The advantage is also the fact everything sounds as if the instruments are played right in front of you.
Overall the weak spot in my humble opinion would be the mid range of the headphones. That being said it could be also due to the excellent bass and bright highs.
Conclusion-
Does that mean the sound signature is not every good? NO! With such wonderful bass and highs, its difficult not to nit-pick. Overall speaking the sound signature is terrific there is NO WAY! you will be disappointed with these headphones for $39! At that price it is highway robbery.
And most importantly i promise you they will blow away the headphones you received with your portable players out of this universe!
So the reason i kept this review short is you cannot find better headphones for this price range. In fact im so pleased with these IEMs i do not plan to invest in a more expensive set until these give out.
Recommended listening:
5/5 for - Trance/House/ electronic music - wonderful high and amazing bass how can you go wrong.
4/5 for- Rock, Metal - Bass gets 2-thumbs up - Guitar riffs sound spectacular- 1 point lost for slightly muddy mids at times based on the song.
4/5 for- Hip/hop/R&B - Bass 2-thumbs up - 1 point lost since the mid Vocals and melody could hit harder.
p.s- Please keep in mind IEMS do keep most of the surrounding sounds OUT. So if you have IEMS with loud music you will not be able to hear much or if not anything around you at all. So be careful where you where IEMS e.g crossing railway crossings/roads etc...
(**UPDATE** 1/11/10- So i have had these headphones for many many months now and use it everyday minus the weekends (I use it when the weather is 30C or -30C with no issues). All i can say is i love these headphones and cannot leave the house without them. Now i have a story to tell about Nuforce the company and my interaction with their customer service.
So 4 months ago i used to pull the headphones out of my ear by pulling the cord by the casing, now what happened was the seal came loose and the casing separated from the bud 0.0. I know i was heart broken, so i submitted a complaint via the "complaint box" and received a reply in 24 hours. They asked for my amazon receipt and i sent them a copy of the receipt with a picture of the headphones. Right away they sent me a replacement set to the address listed on the bill of purchase. They did not ask any other questions and sent the new set out the door before even telling me they did. BUT I had moved from that address in the US to Canada. So i thought to myself there is no way i am going to get those headphones anytime soon cause i live in Canada and i would have to get my friend in the US to collect the package and mail to me. So i notified Nuforce about my little problem and guess what! THEY SENT ME A SECOND PAIR STRAIGHT TO CANADA!!! ... I was flabbergasted! floored, i mean what company in the world has such great customer service??? --)
i am telling you guys these headphones are amazing for the price!! but no other company is going to be able to give you that kind of customer service. They really did an amazing job and now i pull out the headphones properly from the bud in my ear. Nuforce is an awesome company!.

The Most Sonically Pleasing Item I Have EVER OwnedDec 15, 2010
By G. DeLong I'm no audiophile, not by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I never would have known what I was missing until a friend at work introduced me to his NE-7s. I compared them to my $40 Sony in-ear headphones (MDR-EX55) played through my 80Gb Zune; there was a tremendous difference! I thought the Sony's had a great sound, but I quickly realized how muddy and distorted they were compared to the NuForce's... There's just no way to describe the bliss I achieve every time I put these babies in; crystal clear sound, tight, responsive bass, and the ability to produce a tonal range that I had previously not experienced. I'm basically the unofficial NuForce company spokesperson now, and I introduce friends and family to the wonder of these earphones EVERY CHANCE I GET. Seriously, if you are reading this and trying to decide between the NuForces (6 or 7, doesn't matter; they're the same), immediately halt your research and BUY THEM NOW. Let me repeat, BUY THEM NOW. You will not regret this purchase, it is absolutely the best value you can get for earphones under $100. I challenge anyone who disagrees to a duel. A full-fledged duel with weapons and such. While we are listening to our earphones of choice. I may die in the process, but at least I will die with the most sublimely pleasing earphones I have ever known, placed securley and comfortably in my ears.
